What are my civil rights in regards to door to door solicitation or door knocking?

If someone is haring me by forcing a sale via door to door solicitation, and I ask them to leave and they do not comply and continue haring, what are my rights? i rent a home with a big front yard. at what point in the conversation, and where physically, would i be allowed to use physical force to remove someone from my property who was not invited? what if they retaliated and hurt me or my family, who would be at fault? just want to know what the laws are, i would never harm anyone as i never have, but if someone was haring my family and would not leave my door, i would want to know what rights i have to protect us.
