Do drywall installers do taping as well?

I am starting to being a drywall apprentice soon. I was wondering, do drywall installers learn the art of taping as well? My dad told me that it is a different union, I don't know exactly what that means but I think it's a different task or trade and drywallers just don't do that yet.
